Description
An adjustable hospital bed (electric) gives healthcare teams better control when positioning patients during treatment and recovery.
At Fern Medical Supplies, we supply electric hospital beds designed to improve patient comfort while making daily work easier for nurses and caregivers.
These beds use electric motors and a simple control system to raise or lower the head section, leg section, and sometimes the overall bed height.
Instead of using manual cranks, a nurse or the patient presses a button on a handheld remote to adjust the bed position.
Electric hospital beds work well in busy hospitals, private clinics, maternity units, and specialized care centres where patients require frequent repositioning.
A patient recovering from surgery may need to sit upright several times a day. Another patient receiving respiratory care may need their upper body elevated to support breathing.
In many Ugandan hospitals, nurses manage several patients at the same time. An electric adjustable bed saves time and physical effort. Instead of turning cranks repeatedly, the caregiver presses a button and the bed moves smoothly into the correct position.
These beds also help patients maintain some independence. In many wards, especially private hospitals or long-term care facilities, patients adjust their own bed position using the remote control.
This small control makes a big difference. A patient recovering from spinal surgery, for example, can raise the backrest slightly to read, eat, or speak comfortably with visitors.
As many Ugandan health workers say, “Omulwadde bw’aba comfortable, ajjawo stress mu ward.” When a patient feels comfortable, the whole ward runs more smoothly.
At Fern Medical Supplies, we provide electric hospital beds built with strong steel frames, reliable motor systems, and smooth adjustment mechanisms.
Most models include safety rails, lockable caster wheels, and control panels that nurses and patients operate easily. Electric hospital beds cost more than manual beds because of the motor system and electronic controls.
In Uganda, electric adjustable hospital beds usually range between UGX 3,800,000 and UGX 8,500,000, depending on the number of adjustment functions, motor quality, and additional accessories such as mattresses or IV poles.
We help healthcare facilities choose models that match their needs and budget.
An electric hospital bed operates through a system of electric motors installed beneath the mattress platform. These motors connect to a control unit that responds to commands from a handheld remote or side control panel.
When a caregiver or patient presses a button on the remote, the control unit activates the appropriate motor. The motor then moves the mechanical frame that supports the mattress platform, lifting or lowering specific sections of the bed.
For example, if a patient needs to sit upright, the nurse presses the backrest button on the remote control. The motor gradually raises the head section of the bed until the patient reaches the desired position.
If the patient needs leg elevation to reduce swelling or support circulation, the caregiver presses another button that activates the motor responsible for lifting the leg section. The entire adjustment happens smoothly and quietly, allowing caregivers to reposition patients without disturbing rest.
Many electric beds also include a height adjustment function. This feature helps caregivers raise the bed to a comfortable working level during treatment or examinations.
After completing the task, the caregiver lowers the bed again so the patient enters or exits safely. Lockable caster wheels prevent the bed from moving during adjustments, while side rails protect patients from falling.
Electric hospital beds simplify patient positioning and allow healthcare workers to focus more attention on clinical care rather than physical lifting.

Can I use a regular mattress on an electric hospital bed?
Generally, no. Standard mattresses are often too stiff to bend with the bed’s adjustments. You typically need a flexible medical-grade mattress, such as memory foam, latex, or specialized air/pressure-relief mattresses.
What are the standard dimensions of these beds?
Most standard hospital beds are 36 inches wide and 80 inches long (roughly the size of a “Twin XL”). Larger widths (42, 48, or 54 inches) are available for bariatric models.
Will standard twin sheets fit?
Standard twin sheets are usually too short. You will need Twin Long (Twin XL) sheets to accommodate the 80-inch length of a standard hospital mattress
