Description
An overbed bedside table provides patients with a convenient surface they can use while lying or sitting in a hospital bed.
Hospitals, clinics, rehabilitation centres, and home care settings across Uganda rely on this equipment to help patients eat meals, take medication, read, or use personal items comfortably.
At Fern Medical Supplies, we supply durable overbed bedside tables designed to improve patient comfort while supporting the daily work of healthcare teams.
Patients admitted to hospitals often spend many hours in bed during recovery. Without a proper table, simple activities like eating or taking medicine become difficult.
An overbed table slides over the hospital bed and provides a stable surface directly in front of the patient. For example, a patient recovering from surgery in a hospital in Kampala may need to sit upright while having a meal or reading medical instructions.
The nurse positions the overbed table over the bed so the patient can access food, medication, or personal belongings easily.
Overbed tables also support the work of healthcare staff.
Nurses often use the table surface to place medical equipment, patient charts, or small supplies while attending to the patient. This arrangement keeps the bedside area organized and allows the caregiver to focus on treatment without constantly searching for space.
Many Ugandan healthcare workers say, “Omulwadde bw’aba n’obwangu mu by’akozesa, obujanjabi butambula bulungi,” meaning when a patient has easy access to necessities, care becomes smoother.
At Fern Medical Supplies, we provide overbed bedside tables built with strong metal frames and smooth tabletop surfaces that tolerate frequent cleaning.
These tables usually include adjustable height mechanisms so healthcare workers can position the table according to the patient’s comfort level. Smooth caster wheels allow the table to move easily around the bed area.
In Uganda, overbed bedside tables typically range between UGX 380,000 and UGX 1,150,000, depending on the frame strength, adjustment features, and tabletop material.
How It Works
An overbed bedside table functions as a movable table that slides partially over a hospital bed. The table stands on a wheeled base that allows caregivers to position it close to the patient.
The tabletop extends across the bed so the patient can reach it comfortably while sitting or lying down.
Healthcare workers adjust the table height using a lever or mechanical adjustment system.
This allows the tabletop to align with the patient’s body position. For example, when a patient sits upright during meals, the nurse raises the table slightly so the surface sits comfortably at chest level.
The patient can then eat, read, or place personal items on the table without leaning forward excessively.
Once the patient finishes using the table, the caregiver moves it away from the bed using the caster wheels. Locking wheels keep the table stable when in use so it does not shift unexpectedly.
Cleaning staff wipe the tabletop and frame regularly using hospital approved disinfectants to maintain hygiene standards. Many healthcare workers across Uganda value this equipment because it helps maintain patient independence during recovery.

Are the wheels lockable?
Yes. Most come with locking casters (usually on two of the four wheels). This prevents the table from rolling away while the patient is eating or using a laptop.
What material is the tabletop made of?
The most common materials are High-Pressure Laminate (HPL) or Thermoformed Plastic. These are non-porous and “seam-free,” making them resistant to heat, moisture, and harsh hospital-grade disinfectants.
Can it be used with a recliner or wheelchair?
Yes, but you should check the base width. Ensure the distance between the legs of the table base is wide enough to straddle the width of the wheelchair or the base of the recliner.
Does it require assembly?
Most overbed tables purchased for home use come “knocked down” (flat-packed) to save on shipping
